Young champions enjoying Dartmoor National Park

What is Mosaic?

Connecting people through iconic landscapes

Mosaic is a groundbreaking project, led by CNP which helps individuals, groups and communities to understand, access and benefit from the National Parks. It focuses on those audiences who would not normally visit the Parks and provides them with the knowledge, tools and confidence to explore some of Britain’s most iconic landscapes.

The project started in 2000 and initially sought to encourage more visits to the Parks by people from Black and Ethnic Minority communities. At the same time the project encouraged Park Authorities to rethink how they interacted with visitors from all groups in society.

Today the success of the project is clear for all to see. The Mosaic outreach team are working with ethnic minority leaders in 20 cities across the UK to build sustainable links with nine of the National Parks. Over 100 new community champions have helped to facilitate 1,000 visits by new audiences across the Parks. The current phase of the project is supported by Natural England through Access to Nature as part of The Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme.

New connections

Mosaic is widely regarded as the leading model of engagement for working with BME communities and its success has now been transferred to working with young people. An exciting new phase of the project will see young champions recruited in the South West of England who will seek to make National Parks relevant and important to their generation. As well as encouraging visits to Exmoor and Dartmoor, the young champions will help to ‘youth proof’ visitor materials and services!

Mosaic is an important step in opening up the countryside to people who would not otherwise get the chance to enjoy its benefits. It is also part of CNP’s objective to help find a new generation of supporters inspired to protect the National Parks in the future. In 2009 Third Sector Magazine shortlisted CNP and its Mosaic project as a finalist in its ‘Small Charity, Big Achiever’ Award.
