National Park Protector Awards 2026

Today saw the celebration of individuals and groups who have gone above and beyond in National Parks in England and Wales. In an event hosted in Parliament on Wednesday 14 October by Terry Jermy MP, we met with incredible people who truly are at the heart of our Parks.

Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for sponsoring our 2026 National Park Protector Awards.

Living Landscapes Award

The winner of the 2026 Living Landscapes Award, sponsored by Ramble Worldwide is Neil Heseltine of Hill Top Farm in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Neil Heseltine, a farmer in Malham in the Yorkshire Dales, has hosted Country trust Yorkshire residential visits for five years, welcoming around 70 groups and 1,750 children from areas of high disadvantage onto his farm. In a single two-hour visit, he connects children to sheep, cattle, soil and wildflowers, and to the wider story of the Dales landscape, from limestone rocks to the rivers that run down to their home towns. A relentless champion of farm-based education, Neil brings the insight of someone who speaks for farming nationally and a gentle, inclusive approach that ensures every child feels they belong.

2026’s Living Landscapes Award runner up is:

Ullswater Catchment Management CIC, Lake District National Park

Ullswater Catchment Management CIC works with farmers and landowners to deliver nature recovery and flood management projects in the Lake District National Park.

“I'm honoured and humbled to even be nominated for today's award and I was very surprised. I was in a very strong category so to come out on top was a real honour."

Marsh National Park Nature Award

Prosiect Torgoch is an innovative conservation and engagement programme led by North Wales Rivers Trust to raise awareness of the Torgoch (Arctic charr), one of Wales’ rarest and most iconic freshwater fish species and a unique natural heritage asset of Eryri National Park. A relic of the last Ice Age, the native Torgoch survives in only a handful of deep glacial lakes within Eryri.
The project combines science, storytelling, education, art, and community engagement to reconnect people with this remarkable species and inspire long-term stewardship of Eryri’s freshwater ecosystems.

2026’s Marsh National Park Nature Award runner up is:

The Exmoor Pioneers Project team, Exmoor National Park

The Exmoor Pioneers project works across the former Royal Forest of Exmoor, restoring and enriching habitats, supporting priority species, growing new woodland and connecting people more deeply with the natural and cultural heritage around them.

“It's fantastic and amazing that we've won this award. It's really important to raise the profile of this iconic species before it's too late."

Laura Owen Sanderson, North Wales River Trust

As a person with sight loss myself, the work is truly life changing.
