Welsh Rewilding Alliance Launch

Published: 10 March 2026

Campaign for National Parks welcomes the launch of the Welsh Rewilding Alliance as a proud supporting member. The Welsh Rewilding Alliance is a growing movement uniting organisations, landowners, communities and decision-makers to restore thriving ecosystems, boost rural livelihoods and celebrate Welsh landscapes and our wild nature.

At Campaign for National Parks we have long campaigned for Wilder National Parks. In the 1990s we published our Wild by Design report which was ahead of its time in calling for what we now know as rewilding. The report explored how wilder areas could be created within the Parks and considered a range of options for delivering this from small scale (less than a hectare) to large-scale schemes (thousands of hectares) and from non-intervention areas to areas used for low intensity agriculture, forestry or game production.

Rewilding should be recognised as a legitimate and beneficial land management choice across Wales, and where it is an appropriate management choice for nature recovery those who wish to adopt it should be rewarded and supported to do so.

Our Health Check report in 2024 again reasserted the need for more rewilding projects in National Parks and there are now a growing number of examples of rewilding initiatives being adopted in National Parks across England and Wales with the potential for significantly more.

Visit read The Welsh Way to Wild, which outlines how a wilder Wales is possible, where people’s deep connection with the land enables nature to thrive and communities prosper within a vibrant and fairer rural economy.
