Transport campaigner Colin Speakman wins Sheila McKechnie award for Dales Rail Bus Network

Transport campaigner Colin Speakman and Council member Colin Speakman has received the Sheila McKechnie Transport Campaigner of the Year award for his work in developing the Dalesbus network of services, linking urban centres with the Yorkshire Dales.

his is helping reduce rural isolation and improving other qualities of life, by giving city dwellers access to some of the country’s most beautiful countryside. Colin has also been instrumental in finding alternative funding sources for the network.

Commenting on the award, which he received from Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, Mr Speakman said: “In the Yorkshire Dales we have been able to move from campaigning to delivery, through a social enterprise – the Yorkshire Dales Society’s Dales and Bowland Community Investment Company – the best integrated public transport network in any UK National Park.

“I am delighted to accept this award on behalf not only of myself but my inspired team of colleagues, whose work and resolve will be strengthened by the national recognition you have given us.

“In age of cruel austerity we still hvae much to do to protect services for local communities and visitors,” he added.
