Sunflower Fields and Other Journeys On Foot

by Haylee Lunt

Sunflower Fields and Other Journeys On Foot by Haylee Lunt is a series of essays about how access to nature empowers people of oppressed identities – specifically women and working class – to resist the forces of patriarchy, white supremacy and capitalism which are driving environmental collapse. It involves all National Parks and is an argument for the conservation of nature.

Haylee grew up travelling festivals, living from the land with her mum and sister throughout her childhood. This bore a great love for the outdoors, which later translated into long-distance solo hiking throughout the UK and Europe. Haylee has been running a knitwear business since 2019, and recently began working with women artisans in Nepal to supply her pieces. She uses natural dyeing processes to dye them botanically in the UK. Haylee is a Copywriter and Brand Manager living in London.

What was the inspiration behind your project?

“My past experiences of solo hiking, wild camping as a young woman.”

What do National Parks mean to you?

“From hiking Snowdon in my childhood, travelling solo in Scandinavia, or walking the South West Coast Path for an ultra marathon, national parks have been profoundly influential on many of my most formative experiences. I don’t believe I would have the relationship I have with nature without having had access to wild spaces.”

Are you the future of National Parks?

Right now we have a once in a generation opportunity to change how National Parks operate. It’s essential that future generations are part of it.
