Exmoor at Night

by Leah Drage

Exmoor at Night by Leah Drage focuses on human interaction with the night sky in Exmoor National Park. The short documentary sees landscape astrophotographer Shaun Davey, and Space Detectives, Jo and Pete, as they uncover what spending time beneath the stars means to them. It highlights photography as a great way to experience time outside at night, and Exmoor as the perfect dark sky area to appreciate a truly dark night.

Hello! I'm Leah, a Northamptonshire based photographer and videographer who has a great appreciation for the natural world. With the sky and sublime light at the forefront of my work, I create photos to preserve great moments. In 2024 I graduated from Marine and Natural History Photography. After spending three years in a wonderful part of the country, I left with motivation to seek out more great areas of the UK, and share them through my work.

What was the inspiration behind your project?

“Exmoor at night was inspired by an ongoing interest I’ve had with the sky. If it be clouds in the day or stars at night, I think looking up & witnessing the universe is a forgotten way to connect with the world. My dissertation was written on humans’ perception of the night sky, and how photography has impacted our views; this project was a perfect opportunity to expand the subject into a visual piece.”

What do National Parks mean to you?

“Spending time in National Parks has always been a great way to feel more connected to the world, they represent great local travel. The UK is commonly overlooked for having places to explore, but National Parks are evidence otherwise, and we should really take advantage of these little pockets of nature more often.”

Are you the future of National Parks?

Right now we have a once in a generation opportunity to change how National Parks operate. It’s essential that future generations are part of it.
