South Downs National Park - the facts
15 December 1999
A free fact sheet outlining the reality of what National Park status would mean for the South Downs has been launched today (Wednesday) by the Council for National Parks and CPRE. Produced with the support of a range of local and national organisations, the fact sheet dispels the myths that have hampered the debate about National Park status for the Downs since the Government’s announcement in September.
Commenting on the launch of the fact sheet, Sir Chris Bonington, Council for National Park President, said:
"It is important for everyone who is concerned about the future of the South Downs to have the facts about National Parks. We hope that this leaflet will enable a better understanding of National Park status and how it could benefit the Downs."
Tony Hoadley, Chairman of CPRE Sussex, added:
"National Park status for the South Downs will bring many benefits – both for the landscapes of the Downs and the communities that live within them. These benefits include stronger local representation in decisions about the future of the Downs and more resources for their protection and management."
