South Downs National Park edges closer

14 November 2002

The Council for National Parks (CNP1) has warmly welcomed today’s decision2 by the Countryside Agency3 to create a South Downs National Park.

CNP’s Deputy Director Ruth Chambers said: “this is excellent news – a much needed shot in the arm for the long term protection and management of this nationally important area.  We look forward to working with the Countryside Agency to help ensure that the National Park is set up with a robust boundary and with all the tools it needs to deliver its statutory functions of conservation and public enjoyment.  This includes strong planning powers”.

Notes to editors

1.      CNP is the national charity that works to protect and enhance the National Parks of England and Wales, and areas that merit National Park status, and promote understanding and quiet enjoyment of them for the benefit of all.

2.       The decision was made by the Countryside Agency Board at its meeting on 14 November in Cheltenham.  The Countryside Agency will now make the South Downs National Park Designation Order.  This will be published in January 2003 for one month, to allow representations or objections to be made to the Secretary of State before she decides whether or not to confirm the designation.

3.       The Countryside Agency is responsible for advising government and taking action on issues relating to the social, economic and environmental well-being of the English countryside.
