Call for new transport fund in National parks

14 June 2006

The Council for National Parks (1) today called on the government to inject new money into Britain's National Parks to enable everyone, not just those who own a car, to enjoy their health benefits (2). A survey by CNP has revealed that several National Park Authorities (NPAs) are cutting their green-transport budgets (3).

"This trend must be reversed," said Rachel Reeves, CNP's Senior Policy Officer "A new ring-fenced fund (4) would enable NPAs to build upon and spread the best practice identified through CNP's survey. It would address social inclusion, promote a healthier lifestyle and reduce climate change."

"Our report 'Tackling Traffic: Sustainable leisure transport in National Parks - an overview of National Park Authority involvement' describes some of the remarkable and innovative green-transport work that is taking place across the National Parks, and provides an overview of action already being taken in each National Park. However, the potential exists for much more to be done and many of the NPAs require a financial boost in order to strengthen current work." (5)

Speakers at the conference include government minister Barry Gardiner MP who is responsible for National Parks and Professor Adrian Phillips who will challenge the outdated concept of 'jobs versus beauty' and instead promote a vision of cherished Parks which themselves deliver jobs and protect local livelihoods. Former Home Secretary Rt Hon David Blunkett MP will also give an address. Delegates will attend from the National Park Authorities (the statutory authorities which manage the Parks), environmental organisations, government departments and agencies and business.
