National Park nuclear dump should go

10 December 2002

The National Parks watchdog the Council for National Parks (CNP)1 has called on the National Assembly for Wales to put the protection of the Snowdonia National Park at the heart of its decision on the future of the Trawsfynydd nuclear power station in the Snowdonia National Park.

In its final statement to the public inquiry2 CNP has told the Inspector who will advise the National Assembly for Wales that:

·     There is no reason why all nuclear waste (including the reactors and storage buildings) shouldn’t be removed from the site as soon as a national nuclear waste store is available

·     The future of the site should be reviewed through the publicly open planning system rather than being left only to the safety regulator3

Ruth Chambers, CNP Deputy Director said: “Through our evidence we have demonstrated that there is no technical or financial reason why this site should not be completely cleared as soon as a national nuclear waste store becomes available.  This would be the best option for the Snowdonia National Park and its residents.  We urge the National Assembly for Wales to ensure that the Snowdonia National Park is not blighted by a nuclear waste dump for the next 100 years by ordering full site clearance as soon as a national nuclear waste store becomes available.”
