Checking overhead lines

Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid (formerly CE Electric) operates and maintains the electricity distribution network that delivers electricity to more than 3.8m customers throughout the north east, Yorkshire and parts of northern Lincolnshire. The network consists of more than 31,000 substations, around 29,000 km of overhead line and 62,000 km of underground cable.

Northern Powergrid has four National Parks (Northumberland, North York Moors, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales), and five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in its region. We are working with all nine organisations to ask them where they would like to put some of its overhead lines underground. By 2010 we expect to have invested £6.5 million in undergrounding projects in all nine areas.

Northern Powergrid's long-standing membership and continued commitment to the Corporate Forum is typical of the company’s openness and willingness to form mature partnerships with all our stakeholders.

Membership and our commitment to the Forum has no doubt led to greater understanding, better communication and the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to and shape our Environmental Respect Policy. Membership allows us to discuss, listen and share best practice with other Forum members, National Park groups and the Campaign for National Parks. Better understanding of issues and mutual trust and respect can only lead to better decision-making, assisting our customers, communities and businesses alike and at the same time ensuring the natural landscape of these special places is not compromised.
