Hanson’s work in the National Parks

Hanson operates four quarries in three National Parks: Ingleton and Horton in the Yorkshire Dales, Shap in the Lake District and Penderyn in the Brecon Beacons. We also maintain a rail siding at Ribblehead station on the Settle to Carlisle line in Yorkshire.  Other, smaller activities are also located within the Parks, and we own several dormant sites with permission for quarrying.

Hanson goes to great lengths to conserve mineral reserves, for example at Penderyn quarry in the Brecon Beacons National Park we are processing thousands of tonnes of asphalt scraped off worn out roads and putting it back into new material at rates approaching 25 per cent.

In the Yorkshire Dales the Old Ingleton site has been restored using quarry waste and overburden and the dormant reserves, which amount to more than two million tonnes, have been given up.

We are committed to working in partnership and membership of the Corporate Forum for National Parks is an example of this collaborative approach.
