Memories of the South Downs

Richard Reed

Ben talks about how growing up in the South Downs gave him his taste for adventure. Wanting to find out what the South Downs was like during our early days, we asked Richard Reed, a long-term supporter, for his earliest memories.

Richard Reed is a long-term supporter of the Campaign for National Parks and has been actively campaigning to protect National Parks for the last 50 years or more. As a child he spent his holidays in what is now the South Downs National Parks, the landscape that first gave our President, Ben Fogle, his taste for adventure.

To mark the Radio 4 appeal that Ben recorded for us, we wanted to find out what the South Downs was like when our organisation was just beginning so we asked Richard for some of his earliest memories.

Opening the South Downs up to everyone

Mosaic outing to the South Downs National Park

In keeping with the founding spirit of the early campaigners for National Parks, our Mosaic project opens up National Parks to people who traditionally do not think or know that Parks are relevant to them.

In keeping with the founding spirit of the early campaigners for National Parks, our Mosaic project opens up National Parks to people who traditionally do not think or know that Parks are relevant to them, such as those from minority communities and young people.

We support and train a network of volunteers, National Park Champions, who then promote the opportunities and benefits of National Parks to other people from their communities.

Keeping the South Downs safe

Already, we have seen off the first major planning threat to the Park’s natural beauty through our campaign with local communities against a proposed new quarry at Horncroft.

A Celebration of Striding Out

This newly published ambitious book by Colin Speakman covers topics that those who love walking and even those who don't will find fascinating.  With its forewords by our President Ben Fogle and our Vice President Sir Chris Bonington, this is a remarkable book that breaks entirely new ground.

"This outstanding book could not be more timely." Ben Fogle
