Extending the boundaries of the Lakes and Dales

Love the Lakes and Dales? Then support our LakestoDales campaign for them to include even more stunning landscapes

In the 1950s, the Park boundaries were drawn to follow out of date administrative and road boundaries, a strange anomaly which cuts the beautiful Howgill Fells in two with half in and half outside of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

CNP and others have long considered the boundaries of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Park to be ‘unfinished business’ and have campaigned for them to be reviewed. We gave a hearty welcome to the news that Natural England would be consulting on whether the boundaries should be extended.

Achieving a step change in wildlife habitats in protected landscapes

National Parks and AONBs are our finest landscapes. They hold the largest tracts of remaining semi-natural habitats, and thus they have huge potential to become core components of coherent and resilient ecological networks.

Saving green laws from the chop

Tell the government why green laws and regulations are not 'red tape'

The red-tape challenge is a public consultation exercise aiming to reduce regulatory burdens on business. It is looking at every law and regulation in the land including ones designed to protect the environment.

We need your help to tell the government that laws to protect our precious green spaces such as National Parks must not be axed. If anything they should be toughened so that National Parks can survive the constant pressure that they face from a range of different threats.

Ensuring the future of National Park forests

The future of the public forest estate is in question

Join us in ensuring that the future of the public forest estate within National Parks meets CNP's key tests

There has been much debate on the future of the public forest estate in England.

This has caused concern for CNP because one-third of the public forest estate (nearly 86,000 hectares) lies within National Parks. These forests provide a range of hugely important benefits for the millions of people who visit and live in these spectacular places.

CNP is contributing to the Independent Panel on the Future of Forests - due to report in April 2012. We want to ensure that:
