General Election fever
General Election fever has swept the country and we are all eager to see what happens on the 6th May.
CNP has taken a look at the manifestos of the main political parties to find out what they are saying about National Parks and other issues that affect them such as infrastructure, energy and transport.

New evidence shows pylon plans need rethinking
New evidence has been published on the true costs of burying overhead electricity lines underground.
Although undergrounding is more expensive then overhead lines, the cost is just 4.5 to 5.7 times more expensive, not 10 to 25 times more expensive as previously quoted. There are also wider benefits that come from undergrounding, such as a faster planning process and environmental improvements, which the new report does not consider.
Next steps on the Lakes to Dales campaign
We are calling on our supporters to tell the Secretary of State not to miss a once in a lifetime opportunity to extend the boundaries of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.
A public consultation runs until 16 March 2012 - it is vital that the Government gets a clear sense that the unfinished business of securing National Park designation for these outstanding landscapes must be completed as quickly as possible.
Get involved in your local National Park
Defra has announced that new members are to be appointed to a number of National Park Authorities in England.
There are 2 vacancies on the New Forest, North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authorities and 1 vacancy on the Peak District and South Downs National Park Authorities and the Broads Authority.
Trees and woods face greatest turning point in 100 years
We have joined forces with the Woodland Trust and other bodies to draw attention to the challenges and opportunities faced by forests, woods and trees, which are greater now than at any other time in the last 100 years.
Green groups challenge UK to stand firm on greener farming in Europe
CNP and other influential wildlife and environmental organisations have joined together to persuade the UK Government to take a firm negotiating position with the EU over strengthening environmental provisions in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
We fear that unless the UK takes a strong line on making CAP payments, currently worth over £3 billion per year, the current round of reforms will be little more than a ‘green-wash’ for the established status quo.
Good news from the Brecon Beacons
Cwrt y Gollen housing proposal has been refused.
We are delighted that a major proposal for over 200 houses in open countryside in the Brecon Beacons National Park has been refused by the Welsh Government’s Environment Minister. This follows a public inquiry in February 2011. CNP had objected to the plans.
The Planning Inspector concluded that the proposal was contrary to National Park policies because of its size, location and the major effects that it would have had on the Park’s natural beauty.
Nature check
Leading environment groups warn Government over failing nature record
The Government is failing to deliver on its wildlife and landscape promises, according to a report compiled by 29 of the UK’s leading environmental groups, including the Campaign for National Parks.
The study highlights some of the most controversial environmental issues of the year – including the proposed reform of the planning system, a planned cull of badgers and the public debate on the future of UK forestry.
Job opportunities - Mosaic Project Officers
We currently have 2 job opportunities at CNP for a Mosaic Project Officer (Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast) and a Mosaic Project Officer (Snowdonia).
Mosaic is an exciting national flagship project, led by the Campaign for National Parks, aimed at engaging ethnic minority communities with the National Parks.
We are looking for 2 Project Officers with experience in community engagement and organisational development, to deliver the project activity for Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire Coast and Snowdonia National Parks in Wales.
National Park campaigners salute boost for Cumbria’s forgotten landscapes
The Friends of the Lake District and the Campaign for National Parks have joined together to welcome today’s decision by Natural England to make the formal orders that are required to extend the boundaries of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.
