Large wind energy project rejected

29 June 2010:
Wind turbine (Iberdrola Renewables)

The Coalition Government has rejected proposals for 9 large wind turbines at Berrier Hill near Blencathra in the Lake District National Park. In his refusal letter, the Secretary of State cited a substantial landscape impact and considered that the scheme would severely mar the quality of the view towards Blencathra and its associated fells. He said that the turbines would 'severely harm a memorable and inspiring prospect'.

The Campaign for National Parks (CNP) welcomed the decision which was announced in a letter from the Department for Communities and Local Government on 28 June.

CNP's Amy Peters said, 'while renewable energy is a crucial part of the fight against climate change, developments must be sited sensitively in or near to our most precious landscapes. The Government has got it spot on with the rejection of the Berrier Hill wind development and we are delighted that Blencathra and its associated fells have been protected from a development that would have destroyed their aspect and marred their enjoyment by many'.
