CNP welcomes refusal of planning blot

8 June 2010:
Proposed development at Cwrt y Gollen

CNP's Head of Welsh Affairs, Dr Norma Barry, has welcomed the decision of Brecon Beacons National Park Authority’s Planning and Rights of Way Committee to refuse permission for the building of a major development on the former Ministry of Defence site at Cwrt y Gollen, near Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Commenting on the decision, Norma Barry said: “The Campaign for National Parks is pleased that the Planning Committee has recognised that a development of this size and nature would be totally incompatible with the purposes of the National Park. Furthermore, it appears to contradict Welsh Assembly Government planning policies.”

“If allowed to go ahead, this development would have created a whole new community within the park together with industrial premises, a care home and nursery facilities. It would have totally changed the culture and character of Glangwyrney, the village that exists adjacent to the site and, detracted from the cultural nature and beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Park.”

In conclusion, Norma Barry stated:

“It is reassuring to learn that members of the Planning Committee have listened carefully to the objections to this development and acted to protect the special, unique features of the Brecon Beacons for public enjoyment”.
