Saying NO to Horncroft sand quarry

No sooner had the South Downs National Park joined the family then it was facing its first major threat from proposals for a new sand quarry near Fittleworth and Bury in the heart of the National Park. This special place is enjoyed by walkers and cyclists for its wild heath and woodland and a new quarry would have had devastating consequences for this much loved area.
CNP, along with local organisations, campaigned against the proposal and is pleased that the plans for a new quarry at Horncroft have now been shelved. We hope that this means that this special area is now safe from future quarry threats.
If approved the new quarry would have led to 1.5 million tonnes of sand being extracted from the site over a 20 year period. In addition to the noisy equipment required, the quarry would have resulted in a new access road and frequent lorry journeys to and from the site.
The quarry would have damaged the landscape, wildlife and public enjoyment of the area and would not have passed the strict test that the Government has set for quarrying in National Parks, which is why CNP, along with many local people, strongly objected to this proposal.
