News from Scotland

Scotland is currently looking to designate the UK's first Coastal and Marine National Park, which would provide protection for marine species and habitats.  Several candidate areas are currently being considered.  A Marine (Scotland) Act will be developed in conjunction with Westminster's UK-wide sustainable development framework for planning and managing coastal and marine areas including wildlife.  Defra plans to publish a White Paper on marine issues in March 2007 which will provide more details on the UK government's plans.
